Don’t use Canva to design your logo.
Don’t worry, I’m not here to rant at you about why you shouldn’t use Canva. I think it’s a great tool that gives people who aren’t designers the ability to create design assets. And that’s awesome!
It’s just not the right tool for the job of designing your logo.
Canva doesn't provide the right format you need for high-quality logos
It’s a common scenario for designers. Start on a new project and receive a logo…in JPG format. It’s blurry from artifacts, and it’s impossible to resize and keep quality. It makes for a sadface designer, and a less than stellar final product.
This is so important: the original file for your logo should be vector, not raster.
To make a vector format file, you have to use something like Illustrator or the Sketch app for Mac. When you use Canva, Photoshop, and GIMP you end up with raster format files.
You can’t resize raster files like you can with vector files. When you go to resize it you’ll end up with a blurry mess.
If you wouldn't sell design services to others, why would you hire yourself for your own brand?
Designing a logo is a complex task. You need knowledge in color theory, shape psychology, and typography.
There are a million tiny aspects to logo design that a good designer knows how to pull together in harmony.
If you’re not a designer, keep your branding simple in the beginning. Use your talents and time in a smart way.
No logo is way better than a bad logo
When I started building my previous business, I had no idea what direction I wanted to take my branding in and I still had a ton of work to do to get the website off the ground.
I picked a pop of color and a font that I liked and that was what represented my brand for the first few months.
Consistency is a major key to successful branding.
You’re pouring your time and dedication into building your brand and authority everyday. Make sure you’re focusing your time on your own talents and specialties.
Down the road, after you’re making money then it’s time to think about hiring a branding designer so that you get your logo right the first time.
Rebranding is hard, and you end up repeating a lot of work you've already done.
Your brand and logo are a cornerstone of your business. BUT! You don’t have to have a logo to start your business.
Seriously, it’s better to have no logo then a bad logo.
It’s not easy to pull off a successful rebrand. Just ask Gap, Mastercard, Yahoo!, Coke (and Pepsi), or SyFy how theirs went.
I understand having zero budget for your business, but your logo is the last place you want to cut corners. Establish your brand for free with a clever application of fonts and colors. And don’t forget to keep things consistent.
Leave the logo for later.

If you’ve weighed your options, and you know you can DIY an awesome logo, make sure you have the right tools for the job.
To get you started, I’ve packaged up the same templates I use for my Brand Starter Kits. It includes the design master file (.ai) for Illustrator, as well as an Illustrator template file (.ait).
Adobe Illustrator is the industry standard for creating vector artwork. It has a learning curve, but if you’ve played a bit in Photoshop or Canva, then you’re at least familiar with some of the standard features of design software.
